Training for a first ever Sprint Tri-athlon

Meet Kinga Janik, a 25-year-old producer for ABC nightly news (she's got talent!). Kinga came to me a few short weeks ago, some what apprehensively, wanting to get prepped for her first ever sprint tri-athlon (1/2 mile swim, 13 mile bike, 3 mile run), which as she says she got "coaxed into agreeing to do." Having never really competed in these sports Kinga is what I like to call a fresh seed.

Since she's not accustomed to regular exercise and eating right it's much easier to help critique her form and method of training than trying to un-do damage that has already been done.

As far as equipment goes: we are still working on the bike. But I was able to send her online to wet suit rentals where she can actually rent a wet suit for the race for as little as $40 rather than buying one!

Biking shoes can also get pretty pricey, but thankfully there's performance biking where she can buy a new pair for a discounted rate of $80.

For the next 6 weeks leading up to race day on September 11, 2010, Kinga is meeting with me for full body strength and conditioning training 2-3x per week and is doing 4 days of cardio per week on her own, which includes a mix between biking and running.

Just to give you an idea of her training log…

Mondays- Trains with Noelle  (me) for 1 hour of total body conditioning and resistance training followed by a full body stretch; 45 min of indoor biking

Tuesdays- 5 mile run at approximately 8 minute/mile pace w/ 30 sec surges in between each 5 minute interval

Wednesdays- 5 mile run at approximately 8 minute/mile pace

Thursdays- 45 min of indoor biking (working on transitioning outdoors)

Fridays- Trains with Noelle for 1 hour of total body conditioning and resistance training followed by full body stretch

Saturdays- 5 mile run at approximately 8 minute/mile pace; 25 min of continuous laps in pool (approx. 2000 meters)

Sundays- rest day

It's important for me to mention that Kinga has a full-time career underway that takes up much of her free time and not just a typical 9-5 time of schedule. There are days Kinga puts in 13 hour work days and willingly gives up her Friday evenings to meet project deadlines. Thus being said, her training is not exactly by the books. This sprint triathlon is something Kinga is doing for herself not to impress anyone with her performance.  What I really admire about Kinga, and my reasoning for putting her in my blog, is that she doesn't let her hectic schedule stand in the way of her own health. She still manages to find personal time to devote to her own fitness goals, which I think many people often find excuses not to do. It's not always easy to find time, and it's not always consistent, but still she makes it a priority. If more people would find a way to make the time (every little bit counts) to take care of themselves both physically and mentally we would all be in a much happier place.
