Doing cardio doesn't have to be something you loath. Most people think of cardio as a tedious task that usually involves running on a treadmill for an hour. However, that doesn't have to be the case. As long as your heart rate is elevated to approximately 65% of your max or to a point that you are able to sustain for 45 minutes or more any activity is sufficient.
Make cardio an enjoyable part of your day by picking to engage in an activity you can enjoy doing 3 to 4 times a week. For me it's hitting the courts for a good game of tennis, which has been my sport of choice for the past 5 years. The activity you choose doesn't have to be something you are already good at. Learning a new sport is a great resource to use because it requires lots of practice and mental engagement, which keeps you motivated and committed.
Last winter Noelle surprised me with a snowboarding trip to Hunter mountain. It was our first time ever on a snowboard and I soon became hooked. Little did I know snowboarding is one of the most intense full body workouts you can do. Every part of your body is engaged so that by the end of a full day of making several trips down the mountain your entire body is fatigued. You're burning calories while having fun; so much fun that I made the 2 hour hike back to hunter mountain five times last winter and I plan to double that number this year. By adding more variety to your cardio routine and challenging yourself in new ways you are more likely to stick with it.
Noelle and I recently started a Fit Challenge in which we put ourselves to a new fit test once a month. As many of you probably saw from the video we recently competed in the Insanity Fit Test. Next month we will be challenging ourselves to indoor rock climbing, something neither of us have ever done!
